The game of billiards has a rich history that dates back to the early days of English society. In the beginning, billiards was a noble game. It was considered a prestigious pastime and it was only played by kings, queens, and other members of the British royal family. As the game of billiards gained in popularity, it was enjoyed by everyone from commoners to aristocrats.

Billiards was not always played in its current form. The game that is played today evolved from a lawn based game that was popular in the 15th century. The game was moved indoors for convenience, and was played on a table to simulate the outdoor grass area.

Billiards equipment has also changed and improved since the origination of the game. For instance, cue sticks were not introduced until the 1600’s, and chalk was not invented until 1850. It was also during the 1850’s that the game of billiards was introduced in its current form. Since then, billiards has been played in a similar fashion throughout many countries in the world.

There are many different games that can be played on a billiards table. Some of the most popular include: snooker, carom billiards, eight ball, and nine ball. Below is an explanation of each game’s rules and the items that are needed for successful play.

The game of snooker originated in the latter half of the 19th century with a handful of officers in the British Army. Snooker is played with fifteen red balls, six multicolored balls, and one cue ball. Each red ball is worth one point and each multi colored ball is worth two to seven points. The winner is determined by the person or team who gets the most points by the time that all of the balls have been sunk.

Another type of billiards game is called carom or carambole. It is played on a cloth table without pockets and there are many different variations of the game.

Two of the most popular billiards games are eight ball and nine ball. It is believed that eight ball originated in the early 1900’s. It is played on a standard sized table that has six pockets, and players need sixteen balls and two cue sticks for successful play. The winner of the game is determined by the first person or team who sinks all of their balls and then the eight ball as a final shot.

Nine ball is a bit different than eight ball. Though they both originated in the early 1900’s, nine ball is only played with ten balls. These balls are a cue and nine other balls that are numbered one through nine. The object of the game is to sink the balls in order, and the winner is the first person to sink the ball that is numbered nine.
